Red Rocks
The plan was to go to Las Vegas for a holiday, I had been to Red Rocks with Yan Taylor 20 years earlier so this was my second trip.
Our last flight across the pond was a bit stressful so I hoped there wouldn’t be a repeat.
I was driving back from a talk in Edinburgh when the car gears stopped working properly, it was hard work forcing the gear stick home. I took the car to the local garage, it was unlikely to be ready before we went away, so had to change the plans for getting to the airport.
Next I got toothache, not something to take with me to the ‘land of the free’, where more than ten million people are in poverty through medical bills. After a few phone calls I got an emergency appointment in Fort William and my neighbour kindly offered me his car. Paul Brian was leaving the dentists as I arrived, he said he had been in the chair for an hour and a half! Paul was one of my school chemistry teachers, he also put up some new routes at Dunkeld (and elsewhere) in the 60s. I was relieved when I got away with a prescription for antibiotics and painkillers.
There were storms forecast for the day I was to leave Mull, so the boss finally agreed to give me an extra day of holiday, as the ferries were expected to be cancelled. A friend gave me a lift to the ferry.
We climbed at Red Rocks, visited Death Valley, the Hoover Dam and Ash Meadows. We also spent a fine weekend with Todd and Donette at Joshua Tree, they even supplied a house for us to stay in!
