Ian Clough
On Ben Nevis I’ve repeated a few Ian Clough routes: Tower Scoop, Spartacus and The Twist.
I’ve climbed a lot of routes on Skye where he was on the first ascent: Prometheus, Prokroustes, Penitentiary Grooves, Yellow Groove, Vulcan Wall, Creag Dubh Grooves, Strappado, Depravity, Grand Diedre, Boreas Grooves, Shangri-La, Searcher, Belinda, Birthday Groove, Virgo, The Outsider and Judas.
Ian Clough’s routes on Eigg were the first routes in Scottish Climbs Volume 2. I assumed Botterill’s Crack and Collie’s Cleft were named as a joke but the new guide states that Collie and Botterill were there.
So I asked Hamish MacInnes but he couldn’t remember as they were there 47 years ago. He commented on my timing as he is writing a review of Ian Clough’s new book! Ian Clough died in 1970 on Annapurna, some of his book can be read here.
