Craiglea

Craiglea is a naturist retreat one mile east of Lochailort: ‘Scotland’s only naturist resort’.

The West Highland Railway runs past Craiglea, WHR have had problems with landslides in the past so have recently installed water monitoring equipment at the bridge there.

Last year I noticed a steep slab above the road just west of Craiglea. In the winter I took a few photos of Rum and Skye from near Mallaig one day, on the way home I walked up to the slab for a look. It looked worthwhile with unprotected steep slabs and grassy cracks, the outlook was fine from Aonach Mor in the east to Loch Ailort just to the west.

I returned to Craiglea and did some top roping with Cynthia. In early March the first route was led, on hand placed bolts, they were glued in later.

Just over a week later Stephen led Great Wall, at 6c it is the hardest route at the crag so far and I struggled to follow.

These were pleasant days as Covid restrictions meant people outwith Highland Region were absent and the road below had little traffic; but many of the local climbers seem to have noticed us.

In April Stephen led April, Covid restrictions had eased so there was a guest appearance from Billy!

Girdles went out of fashion decades ago but fashions come and go, Stephen led the girdle in May and it has had repeats! He kept seeing (and remembering) bits of other routes as he crossed them so the route was called Memory Lane.
