Glen Lyon
I had been to Glen Lyon a couple of times, walked up one hill 42 years ago and another 40 years ago.
Last week I decided on a third trip to that Glen.
I had two concerns, the road past Ben Lawers might be impassable with ice and the hill I was going to walk up might also be very icy.
As usual I had left home later than I should have and there were a lot of roadworks so it was afternoon by the time I stopped the car, not ideal in January but I didn’t think that would be a problem. Navigation was simple, park at the dam, walk along the loch then walk up the hill.
The hills looked clear of snow so I left my ice axe in the car and set off. The top was remarkably untouched for a Munro, only a couple of stones for a cairn and no path on the grassy summit. The cloud was swirling around and there was a strong cold wind. I stayed on the top for a few minutes and at times I could see a hill to the west which shouldn't have been there.
On the way down, after I got sufficiently out of the wind, I was able to open my inch to the mile Glencoe OS map (that had cost 50p). I had parked at the wrong dam and walked up the wrong hill.

The hill I should have gone up is 3,000 plus 54 feet but the hill I went up was 3,000 minus 142 feet. I’m sure the hill I walked up had the nicer top but I expect I’ll visit the other one sometime soon.
The route I took in red, the route I should have taken in green.
