Chipping, Arrochar
Photo above Yan brushing The Pylon Effect, 3rd November 1988.
I went to Sub Station crag in the Arrochar Alps with Yan Taylor, as I wanted to do a route up the centre of the crag. It was a perfect November day with blue skies, sunshine and a sprinkling of fresh snow on the tops.
I led the route after cleaning; it was reasonably sustained with a number of 5c moves. High up there was a worrying move (probably eight feet above a poor runner) it involved a high step onto a small quartz lump and rock over with no handholds. I kept the crag theme of electric route names with ‘White Meter’, as November was off peak season for rock climbing. Yan then led me up a route to the left; he called it ‘The Pylon Effect’.
There are a number of fine routes in beautiful places that I enjoy doing each year if I get a chance:
Bridging Interest at Neist, Route Two at Diabaig, Resurrection in Glen Nevis, White Shite at Scoor, Spug Korma at Ardtun and White Meter at Arrochar.
One time in the 90s on White Meter I discovered a new finger pocket that enabled a layback onto the quartz lump rather than a rock over.
I was shocked to find that someone had altered the route. If I can’t do a route I go and do another one. A few years ago I returned and filled the pocket with cement.
