Mushroom Picking, Mull, Martyn Bennett
When we were walking to the crag I was collecting Field Mushrooms but Martyn was searching for a different type of mushroom. We climbed a new route that night and called it ‘Mushroom Picking’.
I only went bouldering with him a couple of times, he was strong and keen but worried he might damage his fingers on the rock, bad news for a musician.
The next year his first CD came out: it was shocking, I had no idea he was so good, every sound on the CD was played by him.
In a moment of stupidity I let slip that I had a violin, so he said we should play together, I never mentioned my violin again.
I saw his one man show a couple of times, at Celtic Connections Kirsten got me in for free. On stage he would pick up a succession of instruments and play along with the backing tracks that he had written and recorded. What a skilled and talented man.
Before posting this short blog Kirsten Bennett gave kind and positive encouragement, many thanks to her.
